THE BOARDR METHOD

Conditions first.
Brand second.

01

Rider

Ability, body size, comfort and honest goals narrow the field before price or logos.

02

Mountain

Groomers, trees, park, powder and mixed resort days ask different things of a setup.

03

Trade-offs

Soft flex can feel forgiving; more support adds response. Bright-light lenses can struggle in flat light. We make the exchange visible.

The best goggle is the one that stays comfortable, works with your helmet and gives useful contrast in the light you encounter. Lens colour alone is not enough—check the manufacturer’s visible light transmission range and intended conditions.

Bright sunLower-VLT lenses reduce incoming light. Mirrored or dark tints can be useful, but conditions can change quickly.
Cloud and flat lightHigher-VLT lenses generally allow more light and can improve usable contrast when terrain definition is difficult.
Mixed daysA dependable lens-change system or a protected spare lens is often more practical than expecting one tint to excel everywhere.
Night ridingUse a lens specifically intended for very low light and follow the resort’s requirements.

Fit check

Try goggles with the helmet you will use. Look for even face-foam contact, no painful nose pressure, a secure strap position and minimal exposed forehead gap. Glasses wearers should verify OTG clearance and airflow rather than relying on the label alone.

Never wipe a wet inner lens. Let moisture drain and air-dry it to protect the anti-fog treatment.

A snow helmet should sit level, remain stable when you gently move it and work with your goggles without forcing either item out of position. Certification, fit and condition matter more than extra vents or audio pockets.

  1. Measure firstUse the brand’s size method and try adjacent sizes when possible. Head shapes vary even at the same circumference.
  2. Check movementWith the fit system adjusted and strap secured, the helmet should move with the scalp rather than slide independently.
  3. Find pressure earlyWear it for several minutes. Localised pain usually worsens during a full day.
  4. Pair the gogglesConfirm the frame, strap and helmet brim sit naturally together without pushing the helmet backward.
  5. Replace after impactFollow the manufacturer’s replacement guidance after a crash or when the shell, liner or retention system is damaged.

Comfortable, correctly sized boots give you a useful connection to the board. A board cannot compensate for heel lift, painful pressure or bindings that do not match the boots.

BOOTS

Close, supportive fit

New boots should feel snug without numbness or sharp pain. Check heel hold, toe position and flex with a trained fitter where possible.

BOARD

Match ability and terrain

Length is only one input. Width, profile, flex, shape and effective edge change stability, turn initiation and float.

BINDINGS

Complete the system

Match binding size and flex to the boots and board, then use manufacturer guidance for mounting and stance limits.

TRY FIRST

Rent before committing

A lesson or demo day can reveal whether the category and flex feel right before a full purchase.

Safety note. Snow conditions, avalanche exposure, weather and resort rules change. Check official local information, use qualified instruction, and do not enter uncontrolled terrain without appropriate training and equipment.
