How to think about thickness, seams, entry systems and local water temperature without treating a generic chart as a guarantee.

A thick wetsuit that flushes at the neck can feel colder than a well-fitting, more flexible suit chosen for the same water. Warmth comes from a thin layer of water held close to the body, so fit and construction matter alongside the millimetres on the label.

Cold water can be dangerous. Temperature, wind, session length, exertion and individual tolerance all matter. Use local surf-shop or lifesaving guidance and choose conservative equipment for unfamiliar conditions.

01 · FIT

Snug, not restrictive.

  1. Neck and backLook for close contact without painful pressure. Large folds can pump cold water through the suit.
  2. TorsoThe material should sit against the lower back and waist rather than forming a loose reservoir.
  3. ShouldersSimulate paddling. You need full reach without the suit aggressively pulling the arms down.
  4. Wrists and anklesSeals should lie flat. Excess length can bunch and increase flushing.

02 · THICKNESS

Read the numbers properly.

A label such as 4/3 usually means thicker neoprene through the torso and thinner material through the limbs. More thickness can add warmth, weight and resistance. The right balance depends on the actual water and air conditions, wind, time in the water and how much you move.

Local chartUse guidance from a reputable shop, surf school or safety body near the break.
Season swingWater temperature can lag behind air temperature. A sunny day does not guarantee warm water.
AccessoriesBoots, gloves and hoods can materially change comfort in cold water; local practice is the best reference.

03 · CONSTRUCTION

Seams change the equation.

FLATLOCK

Flexible, more permeable

Comfortable construction commonly used for warmer conditions, with more water movement through the seams.

GBS

Reduced flushing

Glued and blind-stitched seams do not fully pierce the neoprene and are common in cooler-water suits.

TAPED

Reinforced inside

Internal tape can improve sealing and durability, adding cost and sometimes a little stiffness.

ENTRY

Access versus seal

Back-zip suits are easy to enter; chest-zip and zip-free designs can reduce flushing but may be harder to put on.

04 · TRY-ON

Move before deciding.

Allow time. Pull the suit up gradually so the knees, hips and shoulders sit in the intended positions. Then squat, rotate the torso, reach overhead and mimic several paddle strokes. Check that the neck remains comfortable and the lower back does not hold a large fold.

The size label is a starting point. Brand patterns and body proportions differ.

05 · CARE

Make the suit last.

  1. RinseUse fresh, cool water after the session, including the zip and closures.
  2. DryHang folded at the waist on a wide surface, out of harsh sun and direct heat.
  3. StoreKeep it dry and uncompressed. Avoid sharp creases and heavy objects.
  4. Repair earlySmall seam or neoprene damage is easier to address before it spreads.
